Concerning the Music of 2019

Autumn. Damn. Did Nebraska just get covered in three feet of snow? In September? Interesting times. Here are some songs to accompany the rest of your 2019. Fair warning, they do lean toward the folky, rocky, jazzy, noisy, melodic, bluesy, singer-songwriter, instrumental variety. In other words, there should be something for everyone — especially given the fact that it will soon stretch past the 500 song mark.

I try to keep it to one song per album, which usually means one song per artist. But some of the more prolific musicians out there can end up with multiples. And there are a few non-album related singles showing up. There isn’t much of an order, aside from what strikes me as compelling. Though my top favorites of the year do end up in the front half, generally speaking. Will there be an album in the back end of 2019 to best the Purple Mountains, Bill Callahan, William Tyler triumvirate? Who cares — there’s a lot to appreciate, that’s the point. Also, this playlist tends to get updated, added-on-to and shuffled around on a near daily basis, so until 2020 this is a work in progress.
